  • The conntrack  – network filtering system has been added. These are userspace tools that allow system administrators interact with the Connection Tracking System, which is the module that provides stateful packet inspection for iptables.
  • The Mono stack has been updated to the bug fix release 2.6.3 together with MonoDevelop 2.2.2.
  • Python was updated to the bug fix release 2.6.5 RC 2
  • samba has been updated to version 3.5.1
  • The Moblin team has started with the integration of the Moblin UI into the distribution and plan to have everything ready for the next milestone.
  • The LiveCDs  have virtualbox guest tools.  Now features like  screen resizing, seamless mode, and shared clipboards work fine and automatically after boot-up! Check this (~8,5MB) ogv video to see the guest addition features in action.
Gnome/GTK desktop users:
  • GNOME has been updated to the GNOME 2.30 release candidate (2.29.92)
    • With the next milestone, empathy will be the default IM client for GNOME. Empathy supports now sending files via drag & drop and the IRC module now includes support for common IRC commands such as /join.

    • Natilus’ user interface now includes a new split view mode and the default is set to browser mode.
KDE desktop users:
  • KDE has been updated to version 4.4.1 the most important changes:

    • Various fixes in Plasma widgets and other addons, such as the analog clock and the picture frame
    • A number of fixes in Konsole, KDE’s powerful terminal application
  • Amarok is now at version 2.3, “Areas such as podcast support and saved playlists have seen huge improvements, as has the support for USB mass storage devices (including generic MP3 players)”.
  • k3b is updated to 2.0 RC2

  • Switch to pcmanfm 0.9.3 and libfm 0.1.9. Now lxde fully supports trash, automount, gvfs, “menu-browsing” and much more.
  • lxsession: upgrade to 0.4.3 with d-bus support
As this is a milestone release, 11.3 milestone 4 does contain bugs that we know about, but should not stand between courageous contributors and release testing.
The known bugs include:
  • gwibber has been updated but depends on desktopcouch and that stack is not yet integrated into openSUSE.
You can track the most annoying bugs on the wiki along with 11.3 development. If you want to make sure 11.3 final is free of annoying bugs, we’ll need your help finding, reporting, and fixing those hidden bugs.

To learn more about testing openSUSE, visit the Testing pages on the openSUSE wiki. To follow the testing and development process, we suggest that you subscribe to the openSUSE-Factory mailing list (Subscribe | Help | Archives) and join the OpenSUSE-Factory channel on Freenode to discuss openSUSE development.
The next openSUSE Milestone is scheduled to be released on Friday, April  the 9th, with additional new features and bug fixes.

KDE 4.3.4 is lighter than Gnome: Linux2u

KDE 4.3.4 is lighter than Gnome: Linux2u

Strange na but its reality KDE 4.3.4 is lighter than Gnome 2.28.I am going to prove it.On my machine Linux Mint 8 KDE 4.3.4 use only 135 to 160MB Ram while Windows XP 240MB and Gnome take around 210MB. While windows fastest edition Windows 7 uses more than 450MB RAM.Don't believe that KDE 4.3.4 uses 145MB Ram,Lets have a look below.

So, I was also puzzled when I  saw it. Please share your views about it and write your comment with proof. Please note Ubuntu comes in 700MB while Linux Mint KDE 1.2GB,after that KDE is using so much less RAM using Kick off menu while Gnome use Classic menu so much lighter,if you choose classic menu in KDE RAM utilization will be less.

Note: Installation of Linux Mint is not smooth as Ubuntu while SimplyMepies 8.5RC1 64 bit perfom better than all distro but its little bit of buggy.KDE desktop on file transfer uses more RAM than Gnome,so KDE  team has to work over this.

Conclusion: KDE is faster than Gnome and Windows 7 and comes with all eye candy that is not available with these two desktop. Windows 7 is fast compare to Vista and XP when come with more than 1GB of RAM.So,its worst in my list.

Amarok 2.3.0 "Clear Light" released:Linux2u

Amarok 2.3.0 "Clear Light" released

Team Amarok is proud to announce Amarok 2.3.0. It contains many improvements and bugfixes over Amarok 2.2.2 as well as many new features. Areas such as podcast support and saved playlists have seen huge improvements, as has the support for USB mass storage devices (including generic MP3 players).

With large parts of Amarok 2 becoming quite mature, it was also time to start looking forward again. Therefore, this release also contains a number of new features of a slightly more experimental nature. These include a new main toolbar and a rewritten and much simpler file browser. These parts are brand new and based on user feedback, and they will change and improve over the next few releases. The old slim toolbar is still available should you prefer that, but we encourage you to try out the new toolbar and tell us what you think. The file browser's look and feel now aligns more closely with the rest of Amarok with improvements such as breadcrumb navigation, and it is now focused on being a way to find and play music instead of being a multi-purpose file manager.

Thunderbird beta 'Lanikai' released : Linux2u

Thunderbird beta 'Lanikai' released : Linux2u

Mozilla made public the first beta of Thunderbird 3 today. Code-named Lanikai and available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, the milestone makes few noticeable changes to the open-source and free desktop e-mail client. This is not surprising, though, as Mozilla Messaging announced that the goal of this release was to fix problems created by upgrading the Gecko engine that powers the program.

Lanikai is the first semi-stable release of Thunderbird to use Gecko 1.9.2, which is the same engine that Firefox 3.6 uses. The changes made from Thunderbird 3 to the 3.1 beta test version include Mac OS X 10.6 upgrade path from Thunderbird 2 improvements, fixes for autocomplete, tabs, activity manager, minor interface improvements and corrections, and a spate of stability and memory corrections.

One new security feature is that Lanikai requires extensions to come from a secure server using the HTTPS protocol or be digitally signed. Absent either of these, the extension won't install.
