Distribution Release: NetSecL 2.6

Iuri Stanchev has announced the release of NetSecL 2.6, a Slackware-based distribution enhanced with with GCC stack smashing protection and other security features: "NetSecL 2.6 released. In the new release you will find QEMU, servers and new penetration tools. We took our time to separate the usual network utilities and penetration tools and add them in a new section. Also, you will find that now we have a section called 'srv' with some server packages in it. There are many updates to the libraries and additional bindings to Perl and Python that we hope will be useful for future programs included with the distribution. You will also find in the distribution ISO a VMX file created with VMmanager which you can use for creating a virtual machine - mount the ISO copy the VMX folder, unmount the ISO (that you just copied), move it to the VMX folder and start it with VMware Player."

Distribution Release: Vine Linux 5.1
Daisuke Suzuki has announced the release of Vine Linux 5.1 (code name "Cheval Blanc"), a Japanese general-purpose community distribution available for the i386, x86_64 and PowerPC architectures. SliTaz New Cooking 20100221 released: Linux2u

About Slitaz:

SliTaz is a free operating system, working completely in RAM and booting from removable media such as a cdrom or USB key. SliTaz is distributed as a LiveCD, and weighs less than 30MB. The system is quick and responsive, clean and robust. SliTaz is simple and intuitive, providing a lightweight, elegant desktop, detailed documentation and easy to use configuration tools.

Latest Release:
21 February 2010 - New Cooking 20100221

SliTaz contributors are proud to announce a new Cooking version of the LiveCD. This is the last Cooking RC before 3.0 release. The core ISO image is at 27 MB and comes with many changes and improvments. This Cooking uses Xorg as X server instead of Xvesa and provides full UTF-8 support. Within a clean desktop environment, it also provides many applications for daily usage and common tasks. Netsurf replaces firefox as a default web browser. Nevertheless, a Firefox flavor at 29 Mb with sound and wifi support can also be downloaded from official mirrors.
On the updates and improvements side: tazpkg is faster; boot-scripts are updated and home-made toolboxes are improved. Wifibox uses awk for better network scanning. WPA support in the boot scripts have been improved. Boot time is logged for performance measuring. The SliTaz installer will now try to use files from an USB device if no cdrom is found, allow you to create a default user account, set a root password and use a separate /home partition. And finally, LiveCD customization is now much easier. User just have to: boot, modify and use writefs via Tazlito graphical interface or from the command line to generate their own customized CD.
As usual, you can download these new flavors from one of the official mirrors of the project and provide feedback on the SliTaz forum.

Pro: Comes in only 27 MB so it is super fast, offers live CD.
Con: Not all the application is available.

Google Buzz your Social inbox

A new venture called Buzz, from Google, might soon do away with the need for constant social networking emails in your inbox. Google Buzz, which is being rolled out to all Google account holders, aggregates all your social data into one thread in your GMail inbox.

Google Reader users might have noticed some nice social features which allowed you to follow other people and see the items they choose to share. In Google Reader, one could share interesting posts that they come across with others who chose to follow them and could even post updates much like any social network.

The features were quite useful, but frankly did seem quite out of place in an application which is essentially an RSS reader. Now as part of the GMail interface they perhaps make a little more sense.

As part of GMail, Google Buzz brings the same features, allowing one to follow updates from their friends and family, and aggregate it all in one place. Google Buzz can automatically keep your friends and Family aware of any pictures you add to your Picasa or Flickr albums, or if you share in interesting item in Google Reader, of videos uploaded to your YouTube account. It can even update from your Google Talk chat status, or your Twitter account. All of these updates can then be commented on, liked or emailed by people you share it with.

With Google Buzz, all your social interactions and updates can come to one place, right next to your Inbox.

Buzz is also available for mobile phones allowing you to send social updates on the go, with the added geolocation meta-data. So you can browse through your Buzz messages, and see which ones were sent from nearby, or tagged with your location. With the Android and iPhone apps you can even perform voice searches. As a layer in Google Maps for mobile, it shows Buzz posts sent by people plotted on Google maps.

Google Buzz acts more like a social aggregator than a social network on its own. Undoubtedly it is a powerful new way to keep track of what your contacts are up to.

openSUSE 11.3 Milestone 1 released : :Linux2u

The first openSUSE 11.3 Milestone is here. This is the first step toward the next openSUSE release. The most important goal of this first milestone is to test the build interactions
between newly added features in openSUSE Factory, also known as “get the snapshot to build”. It is in no way feature complete or ready for daily usage. There is no code freeze for any component yet, so many major

changes are still to come.
This 11.3 Milestone build will give you a first glimpse of the direction we are pushing the distribution. Read more to learn about the major changes that happened since the release of openSUSE 11.2.

 Desktops

GNOME is at the development version 2.29.5. It is the first GNOME release for year 2010 and fifth development release towards 2.30. A lot of things happened. The webcam booth application cheese completely dropped its HAL dependency. The accounts dialog of the instant messenger Empathy has been reworked to reduce the number of steps to add a new account and Epiphany, the web browser, now stores all form authentication data in the GNOME Keyring. Want to know more? Check out the GNOME 2.29.5 release announcement!
KDE was updated to the first release candidate of the new 4.4 Desktop. The Nepomuk Semantic Search framework has made leaps forward. A new storage backend makes it a lot faster and a timeline view of your files makes finding files used in the past easier. The Plasma Desktop has been further polished. The new widget explorer provides a richer experience for managing desktop widgets. Plasma widgets can now be shared with other users over the network and the handling of storage devices in the desktop shell has been streamlined. Also, in 4.4 Plasma’s little sibling, the Netbook shell debuts as a technology preview. The KDE Development Platform adds the new KAuth authorization framework for easy and secure privilege escalation. The KDE project has a detailed release announcement!
LXDE – the “Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment” is a new player in the openSUSE desktop selection. It is an extremely fast-performing and energy-saving desktop environment. It comes with a beautiful interface, multi-language support, standard keyboard short cuts and additional features like tabbed file browsing. LXDE uses less CPU and less RAM than other environments. It is especially designed for computers with low hardware specifications.

ScreenShot:

Desktop Apps

The world’s best browser Firefox got updated to the latest version 3.6.0. It supports a new type of theme called Personas, which allow users to change Firefox’s appearance with a single click. The protection from out-of-date plugins to keep users safer as they browse got improved and the mozilla developers brought JavaScript performance, the overall browser responsiveness, and startup time up to speed. Thunderbird the award-winning email application from Mozilla was updated to version 3.0.1 which includes a lot of stability and security fixes.
OpenOffice, the free and open productivity suite, in the version 3.2-beta4 (3.1.99.4) is included. OpenOffice 3.2 will bring faster start up times, make further strides in compliance with ODF 1.2 and improve support for other common office document types.
