PC-BSD 8.1 RC1 Released

PC-BSD 8.1 RC1 Released(Development Release)

The PC-BSD Team announced the availability of PC-BSD 8.1-RC1 (Hubble Edition), running FreeBSD 8.1-RC1, and KDE 4.4.4

Version 8.1 contains a number of enhancements and improvements. For a full list of changes, please refer to the changelog. Some of the notable changes are:

  • FreeBSD 8.1-RC1
  • KDE 4.4.4
  • Numerous fixes to the installation backend
  • Support for creating dedicated disk GPT partitioning
  • Improved ZFS support
  • Bugfixes to desktop tools / utilities

Version 8.1-RC1 of PC-BSD is available for download from our mirrors. Also, our Pootle Translation page has been updated with the latest strings, translators should now be able to finish localizing PC-BSD into their language.

In order to prepare for 8.1-Release, please report any and all bugs to our Trac Database!

Now that KDE 4.4.4 and kernel 2.6.34 have entered the archive, we have the pleasure to announce the immediate availability of the final sidux 2010-01 "Ύπνος" release, shipping in the following flavours:

  • KDE-lite, amd64, en/ de, ≈625 MB.
  • KDE-lite, i686, en/ de, ≈620 MB.
  • KDE-full, amd64+i686, en/ de (bg, da, el, es, fr, hr, hu, it, ja, nl, pt, pt_BR, ro, ru through liveapt) ≈2.2 GB.
  • XFCE, amd64, en/ de, ≈520 MB.
  • XFCE, i686, en/ de, ≈515 MB.

sidux is a full featured Debian sid based live CD with a special focus on hard disk installations, a clean upgrade path within sid and additional hardware and software support. The ISO is completely based on Debian sid, enriched and stabilized with sidux' own packages and scripts.

Minimum system requirements:

      • AMD64

      • Intel Atom 330
      • any x86-64/ EM64T capable CPU

      • KDE: ≥512 MB RAM (≥768 MB RAM recommended), ≥1 GB RAM for liveapt.

    • VGA graphics card capable of at least 640x480 pixel resolution.

    • ≥3 GB HDD space, ≥10 GB recommended.
  • i686:
    • CPU requirements:
      • Intel Pentium pro/ Pentium II
      • AMD K7 Athlon (not K5/ K6)
      • Intel Atom N-270/ 230
      • VIA C3-2 (Nehemiah, not C3 Samuel or Ezra)/ C7
      • any x86-64/ EM64T capable CPU or newer
      the full i686 command set is required.
    • RAM requirements:
      • KDE: ≥384 MB RAM (≥768 MB RAM recommended), ≥1 GB RAM for liveapt.
      • XFCE: ≥192 MB RAM.
    • VGA graphics card capable of at least 640x480 pixel resolution.
    • optical disk drive or USB media.
    • ≥3 GB HDD space, ≥10 GB recommended.

ClearOS Enterprise 5.2 Beta 1 Release

Clear Foundation has announced the availability of the first beta release of ClearOS 5.2, a CentOS-based distribution for small servers, firewalls and gateways: "The ClearOS Enterprise 5.2 Beta 1 release is here. Apart from squashing the important bugs, the big news with this release is the available upgrade path from ClearOS 5.1. Please keep in mind that this is still a beta, so proceed with the usual caution. Other changes since 5.2 Alpha 1 include: completed password policy engine; fixed disk usage report; updated SpamAssassin; many bug fixes. New in version 5.2: password policy engine; detailed disk usage reporting; network traffic analyzer tool; custom firewall tool; H323 support; mail aliases added to directory (improved support for Google Apps, Zarafa); base system upgraded to CentOS 5.5."

Zenwalk 6.4 GNOME is really fast

The Zenwalk developers released a few minutes ago the highly anticipated GNOME edition of the recently announced Zenwalk 6.4 Linux distribution. Being powered by Linux kernel 2.6.33.4 and the (rather old) GNOME 2.28.2 desktop environment, Zenwalk 6.4 GNOME includes some new features. For example, the Totem media player now has an asynchronous parsing API; the GNOME Panel was restored to its original layout; support for laptops with multiple batteries was added to the GNOME Power Manager application; DeviceKit-disks received support for disk spindown; and many more!
